POST-AND-PRESENT Activity

Baptism Promises match game

Objective:
This Baptism Promises match game will especially help children turning eight to make and keep the same sacred covenants made by those baptized at the waters of Mormon (Mosiah 18:8-10).

BAPTISMAL COVENANTS Bear burdens, Mourn with those who mourn, Comfort those that need comfort . . .

BAPTISM PROMISES:
Bear one another’s burdens.
Mourn with those that mourn.
Comfort those that need comfort.
Stand as a witness.
Keep the commandments.

See June 2013 Friend magazine, telling about this. When we are baptized, we make promises to follow Jesus, and we renew these promises every week when we partake of the sacrament.

SET UP: (1) Mount visuals on a poster with tape, or a chalkboard with magnets, or (2) Place on a table with youth sitting around the table.

TO START:
1. Ahead of time, tie a string on each youth’s / child’s finger (teachers can help).

2. Say, “Sometimes we tie a string around our finger to help us remember something very important. When we are baptized we make special promises that are very important to us and to Heavenly Father. The prophet Alma in the Book of Mormon is talking to those who went to the waters of Mormon to be baptized. In Mosiah 18:8-10 we read about these special promises:

HOVER OVER or ZOOM IN (to view)

• Step 1: ‘As ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to BEAR one another’s burdens, that they may be light (MOUNT PICTURE ON BOARD);
• Step 2: Yea, and are willing to MOURN with those that mourn (MOUNT PICTURE);
• Step 3: Yea, and COMFORT those that stand in need of comfort (MOUNT PICTURE),
• Step 4: and to STAND as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death (MOUNT PICTURE), . . .
• Step 5: that ye will serve him and KEEP his commandments (MOUNT PICTURE).’
• Step 6: If we keep these five covenants or promises we make at baptism, God will ‘pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon [us]’ (REVIEW PICTURES).”

3. The presenter/leader can ask youth or children one at a time to draw a covenant reminder card, read it, and place it below the matching picture (to remind us of the covenants we made at baptism).
Note: Pay attention to the letter on each card. When a player places the card on the board below the picture (as shown above), the letter on the card should match with the first letter on each picture, e.g., the letter “B” on the card matches with “B” on the “Bear one another’s burdens” picture.

TO MAKE print activity in color or black and white. Mount pictures on board and place cards in a container to draw from.
