TO FIND LESSON: Nursery Lesson 21 – Joseph Smith Saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in the Behold Your Little Ones manual.
OBJECTIVE: Tell children that Joseph Smith was the first prophet of our day. He restored Jesus’s true church to the earth so we could have the fullness of the gospel. It all began when he prayed in the Sacred Grove and two personages appeared.
POSTER ACTIVITY – Jesus and Heavenly Father Appeared Poster
1. Print or copy the activity poster to color.
2. Talk about the poster, saying, “When Joseph Smith was a boy of 12, he wanted to know which church was true. He read in James 1:5 that if he lacked wisdom that he should ask God. So he went to a grove of trees, called the Sacred Grove and knelt down to pray. This is his testimony of what happened just before Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to him. Read Joseph Smith–History 1: 17: “It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
3. Talk about Home Activity: “Please share your testimony with me of the First Vision, where Joseph Smith prayed to God. Tell me about how Heavenly Father and Jesus appeared to him to restore the true Church and the fullness of the gospel.”
THOUGHT TREAT: Sacred Grove cookie or toast. Make sugar cookie dough and cut into leaf shapes, bake and frost. Or, cut out a piece of bread using a leaf-shaped cookie cutter. Add butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. Toast. Talk about a simple leaf walked upon or knelt upon in the Sacred Grove as the boy Joseph Smith came to receive answers to his prayers.
