ACTIVITY DAYS PLANNER

Outdoor Cookout (learn to build a fire and cook outdoors)
1. Obtain a Campfire Favorites handout (shown right), and gather supplies for the items you wish to cook.

2. Learn how to cook campfire favorites using an open fire, grill, Dutch oven, or backyard barbeque.
3. If cooking at a campsite, build a fire at least 15 feet away from bushes, trees, or fallen trees. Use plenty of kindling (2″-6″ pieces of wood), tinder (dry grass/leaves), and wood, but store these at least 15 feet away from the fire circle.

TO BUILD A CRISSCROSS FIRE: (1) Place rocks in a circle around fire area or dig a 2-foot-wide pit in which to build a fire. (2) Lay two 4″ x 12″ logs 12 inches apart to allow airflow, or place three logs in an A-frame. (3) Place tinder and kindling between the two logs or A-frame logs. (4) Place five small logs or twigs on top of logs/A-frame, then layer five more on top in a crisscrossed fashion, creating three layers. Roll up newspaper and place under the two logs next to tinder and kindling. Light the newspaper with a match or lighter. (5) To keep fire going, add more logs, keeping surface flat if cooking with Dutch ovens. You can add barbecue coals to fire instead of wood.

TO PUT OUT FIRE (You’ll need water and a shovel): (1) Break up fire with a shovel, separating coals so they can cool. (2) Sprinkle water on coals; don’t pour (to avoid a steam burn). (3) Cover coals with dirt, using a shovel. Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the fire is completely out and all ashes buried before leaving campsite.

THOUGHT TREAT (Campfire Favorites). See Campfire Favorites handout.
