Take yourself on a walkabout to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to “Be Baptized and Confirmed” and “Keep Baptismal Covenants.” There are many small steps along the way that help us take these two BIG steps. POST-AND-PRESENT
Activity:
Follow in His Steps – Baptism and Covenants Walkabout

YOUTH can teach this lesson to children.
Objective: Take children/youth on a walkabout to learn how we can follow in the footsteps of Jesus to “Be Baptized and Confirmed” and “Keep Baptismal Covenants.” Each small step we take will help us follow Jesus in a big way (pointing to the large footprint).

TO MAKE VISUALS: Print, color, and cut out the images that follow. Use tape or magnets to mount visuals.

Post the small feet word-strips under the children’s/youth’s chairs or around the room. If copying feet in black and white you will need to color the sandals with the star (*) symbol (found on the pattern page) a different color than the others.

ACTIVITY:

  1. Talk to children/youth about the objective above and mount the large footprints on the board. Mount two different samples on the board (e.g.: (1) “Repent” is a small step we take to prepare us for baptism [place under “Be Baptized and Confirmed”]. (2) “Be Honest” is a small step we take to help us keep our baptismal covenant—living the gospel standards [place under “Keep Baptismal Covenants”]).

HOVER OVER or ZOOM IN (to view)
  2. Have children/youth take turns finding a small foot word strip, reading it and placing it on the board under the right large footprint. Talk about the importance of each step.

TESTIMONY SHARING: Ask children/youth to share their testimony on the following: Ideas: What covenants do/did I make at baptism? When we were baptized, we entered into a covenant with God. We promised to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ, always remember Him, keep His commandments, and serve Him to the end. We renew this covenant each time we partake of the sacrament.

Thought Treats for lesson activitiesTHOUGHT TREAT: HOBO STEW (Covenant Cans of Soup or Vegetables). Ask children/youth to each bring a can of soup or vegetables to class/family home evening. Then cover the can with paper and write on the paper: I “Can” Keep My Baptismal Covenants by: (then have them write ways they will keep their promises to Heavenly Father). Decorate the can label with markers. Options for Eating: (1) Open all cans and mix soups together to make one soup (often called Hobo Stew). (2) Encourage them to go home and open the can and eat the contents (keeping the can)*. As they do, have them ponder this scripture in Mosiah 18:8-10 about the promises.
*Keep the can (with the label) to place notes and quotes to remind them to keep their baptismal promises.

Option: The feet from the above activity, could be copied on a reduced scale to fit inside cans as reminders to pull out and practice, e.g. one per week or month. Also, the feet can be drawn from the can and posted to do this activity (placing them on a file folder) to POST-AND-PRESENT.
