I Am Thankful for Birds and Insects

Use for: Primary Lesson, Family Home Evening, Sharing Time

Click the following to find Sunbeam Lesson 13 – I Am Thankful for Birds and Insects in the Primary 1 manual.

OBJECTIVE: Help children feel gratitude to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for birds, insects, and creeping things.

CRAFT ACTIVITY – Birds, Insects, & Creeping Things – Caterpillar/Cocoon/Butterfly Pull-up & Finger Puppet
1. Copy the butterfly puppet images that follow for each child. Cut slits in butterfly finger puppet and top and bottom pockets of cocoon. Glue outside edge of cocoon 1/4″, gluing back to back. Punch a hole at the top and thread a string through the hole to hang. Slide caterpillar and butterfly in and out (folding butterfly to fit).
2. Images help children put on a puppet show where the caterpillar goes into cocoon and a butterfly comes out—the caterpillar becomes a real butterfly.
3. Tell The Butterfly Story: A butterfly begins as a tiny egg that hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar eats and grows. It sheds its skin several times as the caterpillar grows to full size. Then it forms a protective shell called a cocoon. When it breaks, its shell opens out into a butterfly.
4. Place a butterfly on the child’s finger, sliding finger through slits. Child can wiggle finger and watch butterfly fly.

THOUGHT TREAT: Butterfly cookies. Cut out sugar cookies in butterfly shapes and frost. You can paint cookies with cookie paints (2 Tb can milk to 2 drops food coloring) before baking. No messy frosting needed. Sing the following to the tune of Old McDonald. “Butterflies just flutter by, in the flower patch. Caterpillars they once were, from cocoons they hatch. With a flutter here and a flutter there, here they fly, there they fly, right in front of my two eyes. Butterflies just flutter by, in the flower patch.”
