Little LESSON LIFESAVER

I Can Be Baptized like Jesus – two-sided baptism puzzle

OBJECTIVE: The lesson helps children increase their desire to be baptized and to give the children an understanding of how to prepare for baptism.

Review the enrichment activity #5 (p. 59) in the CTRA (lesson 12) manual for which the following activity illustrates (see link/reference* below).

ACTIVITY: Have children put this puzzle together to remind them to follow Jesus and be baptized. On one side of the puzzle is John baptizing Jesus; on the other side is a child being baptized.

TO MAKE:
1. Using cardstock, print or copy, color, and cut out the puzzle that follows for each child.
2. Cut around outside edge of the puzzle first (don’t cut puzzle pieces yet).
3. Fold pictures in half on dividing line back-to-back.
4. Glue pictures together (spreading glue over the entire piece, not just the edges).
5. Cut puzzle shapes out as shown on one side (six pieces).
6. Place puzzle in an envelope or plastic bag for each child to take home.

THOUGHT TREAT (when appropriate): Thought Treats for lesson activitiesFollow Jesus (Footprint Cookies). Roll sugar cookie dough into two-inch balls. Make an imprint in the dough with the side of a fist (to shape foot). Then press down with fingers at the top to make toes or press in chocolate chip or jelly bean toes. Bake.

*DISCUSSION POINTS FROM THE CTRA Lesson 12 (in the manual):

THE ABOVE ACTIVITY DOES THE FOLLOWING (Display picture 2-20, Boy Being Baptized, next to picture 2-19, John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus).

Review with the children what they know about being baptized. Help them understand that baptism is a special experience to look forward to. It is one of the most important things they will ever do. Discuss the following points:

  1. When we are baptized, we become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (If younger children are concerned that they are not members of the Church, assure them that children under eight can be considered members. Once they are eight years old, however, they must be baptized to be official members of the Church.)

  2. We must be at least eight years old to be baptized.

  3. The bishop or branch president meets with us to talk about our baptism.

  4. We wear white clothing when we are baptized (refer to picture 2-20).

  5. We are baptized by immersion, being completely covered by water. (Be sure that the children understand that they are underwater for only a second or two, that the water is not very deep, and that the person baptizing them holds them securely.)

  6. The person baptizing us must be a priest or hold the Melchizedek Priesthood.

  7. We are baptized the same way Jesus Christ was baptized. He set the example for us.
