ACTIVITY:

1. Showing the lifeboat visual, Talk about friendship being an anchor, something that holds our boat steady in times of trouble. Challenge youth to take these Friend-“ship” Anchor word-strips to serve as reminders.

2. With the boat visual, ask youth to take turns pulling out a word-strip and reading the challenge. Tell why it is important, or share a personal experience.

3. Read the following scriptures on friendship: 1 Samuel 16:7, Matthew 25:40, Romans 12:10, and Doctrine and Covenants 18:10.

4. Encourage youth to do this activity with their family.

TO MAKE print activity in color or black and white. Cut out and fold the boat and glue right and left sides of boat 1/4″ only, leaving the top and the inside of the boat open to create a pocket (shown). Then slip word-strips inside the boat.

THOUGHT TREAT: Friend-“Ship” Banana Boats. Share with youth a banana boat treat they can create themselves. Cut a banana in half lengthwise (like you’re making a banana split). Dig out the center a bit with a spoon and add chocolate chips, caramel, fudge, and miniature marshmallows. Top with two maraschino cherries to represent friends. Enjoy the treat as you talk about keeping their friend’ eternal boat afloat (by being an influence on each other for good). Or, just make a banana split.

PUT YOURSELF IN HER/HIS SHOES:
Have each youth choose another youth in the ward or at school, then talk to them and find out all about them (asking them if you can spotlight them). They can also talk to their parents or sibling to learn about their talents, likes, and dislikes. Then later in youth activity, tell about themselves as if they were the other girl/guy (e.g., “I hate spiders. I have the coolest brother. My sister died at age three,” etc.). Then talk about how you can be better friends when you understand and feel empathy.

PAL PET PEEVES:
Brainstorm your likes and dislikes concerning friendships. Ideas will help youth in developing future friendships.

FRIEND-“SHIP” BANANA BOATS:
Share with youth a banana boat treat they can create themselves. Cut a banana in half lengthwise. Dig out the center with a spoon and add chocolate chips, caramel, fudge, and miniature marshmallows. Top with two maraschino cherries to represent friends. Enjoy the treat as you talk about keeping their friends’ eternal boats afloat (by being a good influence).
