LESSON LIFESAVER Activity

Spiritual Gifts writing activity and match game

Tell youth there are two different kinds of gifts, tangible and intangible. Tangible gifts that come wrapped up in a package are nice, but they do not last long. If we focus on these gifts too much, we will become a small package and our lives will be shallow and empty. If we spend too much time on our tangible or physical possessions, we will neglect our spiritual or intangible side. We need a balance to keep us happy.

To Use:
1. Read D&C 46:8-9: “Seek ye earnestly the best gifts . . . for they are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments.” Also Timothy 4:14: “Neglect not the gift that is within thee.”
2. Read the instructions on the envelope to find lasting gifts.3. List ways on the envelope that you can focus on spiritual gifts (for example, read scriptures, Church books, and magazines; attend Church meetings; listen to LDS motivational tapes, videos, and music; turn off the TV; ask for a blessing when sick or in need; ask for the spiritual gifts; pray).

SPIRITUAL GIFTS BOX: Create a Spiritual Gifts Box that youth can cherish to remember their spiritual gifts. Ask them to take small slips of paper and write on them special talents, gifts, and positive character traits they see in each young woman. If there are ten youth, they should all receive ten notes for their box, plus notes from leaders. Ask them not to talk during this time so others can feel inspired as they write. Open, and close activity with prayer.

EXCHANGE SPIRITUAL GIFTS: A week ahead, have youth draw names to exchange gifts the following week. Have them thoughtfully select an item that represents a spiritual gift Heavenly Father has given her. Write a note about the gift, exchange gifts, and read the note aloud. Ideas: A magnet could represent a “magnetic” personality; a plum could say she is “plum” nice; a jug of water (a pure heart and mind); a bolt (she’s like a “bolt of lightning, fun to be around); a diaper pin (she’s good with children); a picture of Jesus (she follows in His steps); picture or poem describing this person; a handkerchief (enjoy her testimony).
