YOUTH LESSON ACTIVITY. I LOVE TO READ THE SCRIPTURES! bookmark and testimony journal. As youth read these specific scriptures daily they can mark with a heart in the box for the day’s reading. Plus they can record their sweet testimony in the journal. A scripture a day invites the right spirit and keeps the wrong spirit away.

LESSON LIFESAVER Activity
I Love to Read the Scriptures bookmark and testimony journal

ACTIVITY: Remind youth to read the scriptures daily with this bookmark and record their testimony on the bookmark/journal.
1. Motivate Scripture Reading: For the next week, challenge youth to read the scripture assigned on the bookmark each day (e.g., on Monday, read 2 Nephi 4:15*). Then draw a heart shape in the box next to the scripture read. In the space below, encourage them to write key words from the scripture to summarize that scripture.
*SCRIPTURES ON BOOKMARK (see below)*

I love to read the scriptures! testimony journal2. Challenge Personal Study: Challenge youth to start or continue a personal scripture study program, and pray for the Spirit of the Holy Ghost to guide them as they read.
3. Encourage Testimony: Ask them to write their testimony on side two of the bookmark. Great study guides are: Preach My Gospel, True to the Faith, and Gospel Principles.
4. Laminate Bookmark: When steps #1-3 are completed, laminate the bookmark to place in their scriptures.

TO MAKE print activity in color or black and white. Color, and cut out Bible and Book of Mormon puzzle pieces and laminate. Option (see #3 above): Laminate two posters for puzzles to fit on.

*SCRIPTURES ON BOOKMARK:
• 2 Nephi 4:15 “And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass. For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.
• Matthew 22:29 “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”
• 2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
• John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
• Jacob 7:19 “I believed the scriptures, and they truly testify of him.”
• Luke 24:32 “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”
• D&C 26:1 “Let your time be devoted to the studying of the scriptures . . ..”

Thought Treats for lesson activitiesTHOUGHT TREAT: String-of-Stories Licorice. To match with Activity 1: Motivate Scripture Reading (above) tie strands licorice strings together. Tell youth that the scriptures are full of a string-of-stories that all tie into living the gospel of Jesus Christ. Demonstrate: If you put them all together side-by-side and tied them together they would serve as a strong rope (all stories strengthen our testimony of God’s plan).

A STRING OF SCRIPTURE STORIES: With two different colored packages of yarn, cut yarn into different-size lengths and tie together (e.g., tie white yarn to pink yarn). Wind yarn into a ball. Ask youth to pass the ball around, with the person before them unwinding the string slowly (an inch per five seconds), while the person in front starts a scripture story. When the person gets to the next knot, the yarn is passed on to the next youth who continues the story or starts a new story.

SCRIPTURE BOWL: Have a bowl filled with scriptures and scripture questions. Youth can divide into teams and race to find the answer, taking turns choosing a question from the bowl. The first team to find and read the answer wins! Examples: Who was King Benjamin’s father? How can I know if the Book of Mormon is true? (see Moroni 10:4-5).

Option 1: Have dads/moms or the bishopric team up with or compete with youth to find the answers.

Option 2: Youth can come with ten of their favorite scriptures to share in the scripture chase.

SCRIPTURE SEEK AND RUN:

Create a challenging scripture game where young women search the scriptures in teams and run to find clues taped to the walls before time is up.

To Make Game: Before the activity, have young women class presidents and leaders get together. Search the scriptures together and write questions on slips of paper. On a separate paper, write clues that provide the answers (to be taped to walls around the activity room.) Sample Question: In 1 Nephi 13:9, what destroys the saints of God and brings them down into captivity? Clue card: “the __ __ __ __ __ __ of the world.” The answer and missing word is “praise.”

To Play: You’ll need a watch with a second hand. Divide young women into teams and take turns drawing a question. Teams have 1 minute to find the scripture and the clue taped to the wall.

If they can’t do this, the other team has 1 minute to find the answer. If the second team can’t find it, the first team tries again. The team with the most clue cards completed wins.

Rules: The 1-minute time starts after the question is read. The team that is not participating does not open their scriptures until it is their turn. Scriptures must be closed at the beginning of each question. Write in a few missing words as a clue after 1 minute is up.
