ACTIVITY: My Success Garden Goal Plan

Using the planner form, encourage young women to plant in their garden of life things that are of great worth and value (testimony, education, love for family and friends). Remind them they must—

1. Weed Their Garden. Read 2 Nephi 8:3 and write on planner things they want to change.

2. Plant Their Garden. Read D&C 59:17–18 and write on planner talents they want to develop.

3. Water and Nurture Their Garden. Read Isaiah 58:11 and write in the planner how they will use their time and energy to create a successful garden.

THOUGHT TREAT: Fresh Garden Snacks. Say, “Imagine what your garden would be like if you didn’t weed, plant, water,  and nurture it. Think about your life’s garden and what it would be like if you didn’t take care of it. Now, imagine life without success and also with it. Look for success each day and remember that success is a journey. So ‘plot’ your garden plan and nourish your garden.”

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT:

In this “put-down” world, do a “face-lift” activity. Have some moms come and pamper their daughters. If you can use a beauty salon (after hours), great, but if not, just make do by making a salon setting. Have moms wash their daughters’ hair, do their nails, give a facial, neck massage, etc. Have each mother write a letter to their daughter ahead of time, expressing her belief in her that she can make it through this world of ups and downs.

SUCCESS SEMINAR:

Have different speakers/experts in one skill or another tell young women what it is like to live in their world of competition, and live with honor. Talk about treating others with respect as they pursue their education and careers to enable them to work inside and outside of the home. Talk about how to organize and make good use of their time and how they use success tools such as a planner, phone, computer, and office equipment to succeed. Some could talk about successful home careers and the advantages of working at home. They could also talk about the skills needed to work at home.

QUOTE:

“Thoughts have a great deal to do with how we live, whether we’re enthusiastic or depressed, whether we enjoy success or experience a degree of failure, whether we enjoy spirituality or suffer from a lack of it, and in many respects, I believe, whether we are obedient or disobedient to the laws of God. Some modern behaviorists have indicated that the human thought process is very much like the operation of a computer where the conscious and subconscious mind is concerned. The input which we take into that process has much to do with the output in terms of attitude, mood, and behavior” (Dean L. Larsen, “Thoughts about Thoughts,” Speeches of the Year, 1976 [Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1977], p. 116).
